To provide information and guidance to visitors to Durham City. To promote the qualities of the city and the wider county as a
tourist destination. To support local businesses and local events.
Situated in the market place, engaging with both tourists and locals alike. You will provide people with information, directions,
suggestions etc regarding their visit. Our season begins usually at Easter and continues every day through to early October.
We work in groups of at least two, usually three or more but never alone, for a two hour shift. We work three shifts per day Monday to Friday from 0930 to 1530, two shifts on Saturday, 1000 to 1400 and two on Sunday 1100 to 1500. The majority of our volunteers do the same shift each week, some fortnightly. We are also able to offer extra shifts to cover holidays etc.
Should the weather become too adverse then we simply cancel the shift.
Above all to be willing to help people, to engage with them in a positive and friendly manner. Knowledge of Durham City is useful but not essential. What is necessary however is to have an enthusiastic approach to promoting the city and wider county. There’s always something new to learn even for those Pointers with ten or more year’s experience. We don’t have any seating where we operate from in the market place so you must be comfortable standing for a couple of hours.

Induction is flexible, it depends on the needs of the volunteer. Usually buddied up with an experienced colleague for at least two sessions of on the job training.
We are entirely volunteer run, there are no expenses paid.
You will be provided with your own distinctive Pointers tabard/hi vis gilet in bright pink.
From time to time we are able to take advantage of free familiarisation visits to local attractions.
