Join your local Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) team at HMP Durham, HMP Frankland and HMP Low Newton.
The IMB helps to ensure that proper standards of care and decency are maintained within places of detention, including prisons and immigration detention centres to ensure detained individuals are being treated fairly and humanely. .
You’ll monitor activity across the establishment, talk to prisoners or detained persons and make sure they are treated fairly and are given the support they need.
Feedback currently , says: “It could be the most rewarding thing you have ever done. You can make a real difference to prison life, not just in responding to an individual request or complaint, but also by raising concerns about everything from crumbling buildings to people being kept in solitary confinement for too long.”
Anyone over 18 can apply.
Key qualities needed include analysis, decision making, communication and teamworking skills, and a commitment to independence and inclusion, as well as an open minded approach .
The time commitment is approximately 3 visits per month and 1 board meeting. Please note during induction this may be more.

Although it’s an unpaid role, travel, childcare and loss of earnings expenses are available and full training and support is provided.
