Join us to make a difference for those in immigration detention
IMB members are unpaid public appointees, appointed by ministers to report on whether those being held in immigration detention facilities are being treated fairly and humanely. They are given unrestricted access to detained people, out of sight and hearing of members of staff if necessary.
Derwentside IRC is a fully contained residential centre housing for women.
As a current IMB member says: βIt could be the most rewarding thing you have ever done. You can make a real difference to the experience of people in immigration detention, not just by monitoring the way they are treated, but also by raising a range of immediate concerns, such as the medical needs of a vulnerable individual, the care of someone at risk of self-harm or the needs of a victim of trafficking.β
You see places of detention from the inside and work as part of a dedicated IMB team. Anyone over 18 can apply β detained people come from all walks of life and so should our members.
We are looking for people who share our values and commitment. You will need to: be a good listener; always act with integrity; be committed to equality, diversity and inclusion; be able to analyse observed events and behaviour; make decisions and apply common sense. You will also need to work within a team, be a good communicator and be computer literate.
Derwentside IRC, Corbridge Road, Consett, DH8 6QY. You will be expected to commit to an average of two to three visits a month and attendance at a monthly meeting.
Although this is an unpaid role we pay travel and subsistence expenses, childcare/carer costs and, in certain circumstances, contributions towards loss of earnings.
