DurhamLearn works with adults and young people to support them to access the skills and education needed to live and work well in the modern world. Our Foundation Learning Team is looking for volunteers for an exciting new initiative aiming to support adults (aged 19+) across County Durham who need help with the basic literacy skills they need to begin to read well.
Working through a dedicated programme of study designed to help learners access the skills they need to learn how to read or improve basic reading skills. Supporting learners to access further learning choices as appropriate.
No experience necessary, but a good level of numeracy and literacy would be required. Plenty of patience and the ability to work in a calm and sensitive manner. The ability to dedicate at least one hour per day (over 4 days) to support at least one learner.
We aim to recruit and deliver all over County Durham wherever the need arises. It is envisaged that local libraries and community centres will be used for our delivery.
You will be able to access all of Durham County Council's training opportunities and you will be attached to the Foundation Learning Team where you will be required to undergo training in Fundamental British Values, Safeguarding and the Prevent Duty.
Resources and equipment will be provided and you will be able to claim mileage and parking or bus fare to and from the location in which you are volunteering.
You will be able to access further employability training and explore further opportunities to work with DurhamLearn.
This is a new initiative so we cannot guarantee a placement. If an opportunity arises, we may ask you to travel a short distance. This will depend on our recruitment of learners.
Full induction and training will be given.
1:1 working will be required, but we will always ensure centre staff are available so you will never work completely alone.
You will be required to apply for a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) certificate through Durham County Council.
