Castle Eden Dene National Nature Reserve is an ancient woodland located in the centre of Peterlee.
Castle Eden Dene, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a National Nature Reserve (NNR), making it an important natural corridor for biodiversity conservation. As an NNR, it provides a sanctuary for many species that are rare or declining elsewhere, ensuring their survival and offering visitors a glimpse into an ancient and biodiverse ecosystem. Notable wildlife includes various bird species, mammals like badgers and deer, and a rich variety of plant life, including some local scarcities.
Events and engagement volunteers will work closely wit staff to develop and deliver a fun and variable events programme that helps members of our local community to connect with nature.
As an Events and Engagement volunteer, you will:
- Assist in the planning and execution of educational and community events such as guided walks, workshops and family activities.
- Engage with visitors to raise awareness of the reserves natural features, deep history and wildlife.
- Support the development of educational materials and displays.
- Help with social media and marketing efforts to publicise events and activities.
- Provide information and assistance to visitors, ensuring a positive and informative experience.
Skills and Experience:
- A passion for nature conservation and environmental education.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Enthusiasm for engaging with the public and working with diverse groups.
- Creativity and organisational skills for event planning and execution.
When

- Frequency of events can vary depending on holidays and seasons.
Where
- Volunteers will need to report to Natural England Office at Oakerside Dene Lodge, Stanhope chase before heading out into the Dene.
As a new volunteer you will undertake an induction process where we will introduce you to the site and answer any questions you may have.
Full training will be provided when you begin volunteering with us, we also provide refresher training and invest in training and development for existing volunteers where appropriate.
As part of our volunteer team you will also be included in wider volunteer training, celebration and gratitude events.
